ASTM F3571-22 provides a guide on how to characterize the quality of metal powder feedstock used in additive manufacturing. As described in the standard guide,
“understanding of the effects of shape on powder spreadability and flowability in the creation of the bed in powder bed fusion AM and the density and porosity of the final AM parts (definitions in ISO/ASTM 52900 and Terminology B243). Ultimately, specifications can be developed for quality control (QC) tolerances for these shape parameters that can be measured with a straightforward, fast automated analysis”.
Hence, Microtrac’s SYNC is the perfect tool to accomplish quality control of metal powder feed stock to measure particle size and shape using laser diffraction and dynamic image analysis.

Advantage of Microtrac's synchronization measurement of laser diffraction and dynamic image analysis with the patented blend algorithm for the detection of a small number of oversized particles.
Two metal powder samples with a median (d50) of 34 µm and 37 µm.
The shape analysis proves that one sample consists almost exclusively of spherical particles, while the other contains a high proportion of irregularly shaped particles.
